Cana Negro and Land-Boat-Land Arenal to Monteverde

The next morning in Arenal we were hypnotized once again by that view!

Here are some of the flora around our property.

Tree trunks being used as fence posts

Our next excursion was to Cana Negro (Black Cane) a Wildlife Preserve which is located right near the Nicaraguan border.  There we got a different aspect of nature and saw our first monkeys: capuchin, howler, and spider monkeys.  This tour presented sp many new species of animals that we did not see walking in the forest!

Capuchin (whitefaced) monkey

Some sort of salamander I believe

Anhinga (waterfowl) on a branch

A caiman (smaller than alligators or crocodiles)

I have no idea what the name of this fat bird is...

Some sort of crake

The next morning before preparing to move on to our next destination, Monteverde, once again we got perhaps the clearest view of the volcano!

So clear

To get to Monteverde, the fastest way is to cross Lake Arenal by boat.  To drive would take a full-day on bumpy roads.  This was officially a "transfer" from one of our destinations to another but this "land-boat-land" can be considered a tour unto itself!

La Fortuna is at 350 m but Monteverde being in the mountains at the continental divide is at 1500 m.  So the last leg was quite the scenic yet rocky adventure all on dirt road.

Monteverde - to be continued on my next blog post...stay tuned!
